Residents of Porvorim may finally heave a deep sigh of relief as there is some hope that they will finally have a new market that will rid them of the filthy, dilapidated market and the anti- social activities that occur there.
Minister for Housing Milind Naik has assured to construct a new market in Penha- de- Franca panchayat in Housing Board Colony, Porvorim possibly by the next financial year.
Responding to the calling attention motion moved by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, Naik said that the Housing Board is aware of the condition of the market and as such a new market has been proposed to develop at the site.
The minister said that board has already initiated the process to appoint a suitable consultant for the construction of new market complex.
Naik said that while constructing a new market complex, the vendors would be temporarily shifted to a nearby shed and they will be provided slots in the new complex.
He said that pending selection of consultant, the board has already initiated action to carryout necessary repairs to the existing structures to prevent any untoward incidents to allay fears of the occupants.
“ The occupants have also been given notices to temporarily vacate the premises for carrying out the repairs of the market.
Khaunte earlier tabling the motion stated that the people from Porvorim have to go to places such as Mapusa and Panjim to fetch vegetables as the condition of the market is pathetic.
He said that the consecutive governments had given false assurances to construct the new market but have failed to keep their promises. Khaunte feared that the occupants of the market fear for their lives due to its dilapidated condition of the structure.
